Introduction

One of the greatest yet, undeservedly controversial figures of the XX Century was without a doubt Pius XII- an extraordinary man who had been revered by many but maligned by others. Consequentially some of his achievements have remained relatively unknown.

He played an important role during the most convulsive and bloody period in the history of mankind. We must find out how Pius XII, as the head of the Catholic Church, coped with the persecution and annihilation of whole ethnic and religious groups by the Nazis. Did the Pope do his best in trying to rescue the innocent victims of the Holocaust?  We also must find from historical records an answer to a series of allegations that have been obscuring his legacy. As Pius XII’s biographer, Michael O’Carroll said: "Pius XII remains a personality challenging, enigmatic to the point of mystery, who enriches all those who are satisfied with nothing but the truth."
